Miri, Dec 1 2007: Muhammad Aiman Hambali B. Zamri, 4, and Susanti Anak Daba, 12, were flown in from Limbang to Miri, where they underwent successful repair operation for cleft lip and palate at Columbia Asia Medical Center, Miri. They are the first beneficiaries of the Wings for Children Programme, an initiative by MASwings that provides free air passage for ambulatory children up to 12 years of age to undergo medical treatment for life threatening or chronic illnesses.
Dr Amin Khan, Managing Director of MASwings, presented a mock air ticket to the two children at a simple ceremony at the Columbia Asia Medical Center here today. The event was witnessed by Assistant Minister Infrastructure, Development & Communication Sarawak, YB Dr.Lee Kim Shin.
Dr Amin Khan said, "We started MASwings with the clear objective of providing lifeline support to the people within Sabah & Sarawak through adequate air link network. In line with the objective, and recognising the difficulty in getting medical treatment in remote areas, Wings for Children was thus created to cater to the welfare of the children. This is our way of saying "we care".
“I am glad to see that the Programme has started reaching out to the children in need. We hope Wings for Children will continue to benefit more children in future. There are other programmes in the pipeline we hope to introduce as our contribution to the community,” he continued.
Susanti's mother said that she was most grateful for the air ticket sponsorship, which enabled her to come for this charity project without which her daughter would not be able to come even though the operation is free.
Mohd. Aiman's mother was moved by all the help that has been rendered to her son and herself so far. She said she is grateful that she can fly to Miri this time with the sponsorship because the charity project is not always available and her son would have missed the chance to have his corrective surgery.
MASwings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, commenced its operations on October 1 2007, offers 451 weekly flights, which serves a network of 21 destinations in Sarawak and Sabah as well as the Federal Territory of Labuan. It commands a fleet of 8 Fokker 50 and 5 Twin Otter aircraft.
